Tips for a creative kids room with Nicole Ray from Minty Magazine
When we think about designing a beautiful, fun, playful and functional kids’ room, Minty magazine is our go-to inspo’ guide. As creator, editor and mum of two, Nicole Ray is the woman in the know about all things children’s design and we are so excited that she has shared her top tips for crafting a creative kid’s room.
The joy of kids' bedrooms is how much fun we can have being creative with the design. The kids décor scene has exploded over the past 5 years and we are now so lucky to have a plethora of options available for spectacular kids rooms. Regardless of budget, whether you own or rent your home, personal style or your kids' passing fads, an insta-worthy kids room can be easily achieved with a little creative thinking.
Here are my top 5 tips for nailing a creative room for your kids.
one.
Work with a theme
A theme is a great place to begin your room design journey. It will create cohesion in the space and offer guidance with your product selections. Don’t feel pressure to go all out – a subtle theme works perfectly! This Australiana room is a great example. The print of the Australian natives set the tone for the colour palette to carry through the space, and the Australia treasure board is a practical addition with a nod to our theme. A gentle approach can leave a big impression.
two.
Add a statement wall
For creative impact, a statement wall will give you maximum bang for buck. With a huge range of wallpapers and removable decals on the market it is easy to find something to suit any room design. Experiment with full walls, half walls or even shapes that suit your space. If you are prepared to go all in, a large-scale mural or custom artwork will be an absolute showstopper.
three.
Decorate and educate
Tick two boxes at once with beautiful educational posters and decals. There are endless options such as timetables, alphabets, world maps or new languages that can be displayed like art in your kids room. With colour options available to suit any style it is easy to educate as you decorate! We particularly love affirmations and mindfulness posters for kids.
four.
Get creative with your sleep zone
We love to work with three fundamental zones in kids rooms — the sleep zone, the play/study zone and the read/relax zone. An oversized headboard with a perfectly placed side table creates a beautifully defined zone for the perfect night's sleep.
five.
Get graphic
A monochrome palette is an ideal base for a graphic flourish. Simple lines can have a big impact. Get creative with the placement and soften the lines with rounded edges on your accessories, or gentle shapes in your art. Muted tones complete the look.
